In the spirit...

Autumn came upon me quicker than I expected.

It seemed like it was bare toes weather 2 days ago and now I’m searching my dresser for fluffy socks to warm up my toe popsicles. I guess sandal season is over.

My winter comforter has been brought out of its summer hibernation.  Freshly cleaned and wrapped around my bed, it begs me to climb within its embrace and welcome the comforting weight to drag me under to a sound sleep.

I didn’t realize it until now, but I’ve been waiting for this season since the beginning of summer. Yes, I was done with the snow and rain of spring, but truthfully, I love the smell and atmosphere of this time of the year. And, it has NOTHING to do with Pumpkin Spice anything. I hate that crap.

I’m not stuck to anything from the heat. There is no humidity. I can sleep. I can breathe. I can cook. I can snuggle. I can live unfettered. Don’t get me wrong, I love, love, love floating on a raft with a good book, but you can only do that for so long before you’re either burned to a crisp by the sun or wrinkled like a raisin.

Last night I tucked into the over-sized couch with a fuzzy blanket – making myself a human blanket burrito. All the lights were turned off and I let the warm glow of the television be my sight source.

I started to notice that my blinks got longer and longer. Overly comfortable and mentally drained from the day, I immediately fell asleep.

I think what I love about Autumn (besides Halloween – my favorite holiday) is that I equate it with comfort, family, friends, food and fun. I love to feed and take care of family and friends. I love to gather people and talk and drink late into the evening. Let the conversations go wherever they may. Reconnect and laugh until your sides ache.

While I know that Autumn is when everything in nature dies and gets recycled into the earth to be reborn in the spring, it’s really the time of year that I come to life.

I’ve been dormant for so long, I can’t wait to bust out and live.

Ps – Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature ~ Nietzsche
